Description
This is an original antique "Dustless," crayon box. It was made by the Beckley-Cardy Company, in Chicago, Illinois. The company was in business from 1900 until 1990. Beckley-Cardy Co., was a school supply company. This box measures: 6 3/8 inches in height, 7 inches in length, and almost 4 3/8 inches in width. The two compartments provide for a great number of crayons to be neatly stored (or a combination of crayons, pencils, and pens). I would speculate that the box comes from the earlier history of this company. Crayons did not mean what we think of crayons today. Crayons in 1900 were basically chalk. Even today, a Carpenter's crayon is actually a stick of chalk. Most lumber yards or big box stores will still sell Carpenter's Crayons. I personally used them for several decades, and If I looked hard would probably find some in my shop. This crayon box is simply beautiful. It also has a component of history, having been made by a 1900 American company. The indications of use perfectly enhance this box. I am sure that if it could reveal it's history and the hands (young and old) that have handled it -- It would then be priceless.
