    Description

In this auction we offer a scarce variant beer stein made by the Chittenango Pottery Company in Chittenango, NY between 1897-1901.
Chittenango Pottery traded a line of their distinctive Arts & Crafts Movement inspired mugs to the Manning & Bowman Company in Meriden, Connecticut in return for pewter caps made by Manning & Bowman that Chittenango could affix to some of their products. Most folks don't know that many steins featuring the Manning & Bowman name were not made by Manning & Bowman at all. Manning & Bowman was a metal company, not china. Once in a blue moon you find a "Manning & Bowman" stein but with the letters CPCo China stamped into the bottom rim (see photo 2). This is proof positive that the steins were made in Chittenango and only jobbed by Manning & Bowman. Every serious collection of Chittenango Pottery or New York stoneware should have one of these "double strike" mugs. It helps to tell the Chittenango story. This mug stands 5 1/8" tall and is the standard "pug" or Heidelberg style employed by Chittenango. The "Drinking Monk" motif is a Chittenango classic. The glaze is the more difficult to find reddish/brown. The stein is in excellent condition with only slight glaze loss on the handle (see photo)--so typical of Chittenango products.
