Product Description:
This offering is for a new-old-stock Shimano Deore DX hubset (Model HB/FH-M650). It's an early 90's hubset with specs that are becoming increasingly difficult to find in today's market (and this includes a respectable list of cassette compatibility options). Detailed specifications include the following...
Hole count (front/rear):
32H / 32H
Locknut dimensions (front/rear):
100 mm / 135 mm (see expanded discussion below on freehub spacing)
Cluster compatibility (rear):
6/7-speed (non Dura-Ace) UniGlide cassette or 7-speed HyperGlide cassette
Axle type (front and rear):
hollow type with matching quick release skewers
Weight (front and rear):
664 grams
Other specifications:
For those that want to know the specific hub body length (or said another way...the length of the splines on the hub body), we measure them to be 31 mm (and this includes an 8 mm external threaded section for either a 6 or 7-speed UniGlide cassette). As most understand, a HyperGlide cassette will utilize the internal threads also present on this hub body...so the threads located on the underside of the visible UniGlide threads.
We want to confirm the hub body is the fairly desirable hybrid (Uniglide/HyperGlide) model that will accommodate a 6/7-speed UniGlide cassettes or a 7-speed HyperGlide cassette (although, stay away from Dura-Ace UniGlide cassettes, as they will not mount on this freehub, but all other Shimano UniGlide 6/7-speed cassettes should mount fine). One other note on compatibility...the HyperGlide hub body design on this freehub is of the non compact variety, so the smallest HyperGlide sprocket that will mount on this hub body is a 12T sprocket (so avoid the 7-speed HyperGlide cassettes with an 11T high gear).
As alluded to above, the Deore DX groupset had a relatively short shelf-life...from '90 to '93...but was still a good quality offering and widely considered one step below the very well respected Deore XT groupset from this era. Shimano literature further indicates this model hubset has a one-pieced forged aluminum alloy design...so a very strong and durable offering that should hold up well under stressful conditions. This same reference material also indicates the cup-n-cone bearing design is enhanced to include some sealing properties that should help reduce internal wear. Regarding the latter, Shimano refers to this as a lip-type/contact sealing mechanism that is designed to help keep dirt, moisture and other elements from reaching critical internal parts...bearings, races, etc. Now I will be the first to admit these sealing properties are not on par with more current cartridge bearing designs, but I believe Shimano's claim still holds some merit.
As for condition, these hubsets have never been laced and include matching skewers. They came to us bulk packed, so there is some shopwear (i.e., scuffs and scratches in the silver finish), but they still show fairly well overall.
Listing Update...I am nearing the end of my stocks in these hubsets. As a result, I have begun updating the pictures to reflect the next hubset that will sell/ship. To this end, I can confirm that while this hubset does have some shopwear, it still shows fairly well overall and shows no signs of ever having been laced. Please also note that while we have multiple quantities listed for sale, we will repeatedly update the pictures to represent the next offering that will sell/ship.
Freehub locknut-to-locknut spacing...
We noted the left (non-drive) side of the freehub includes two spacers that measure a total of 10 mm (one is an 8 mm spacer and the other is a 2 mm spacer). The reason we believe this is critical is because this hubset could be re-spaced to accommodate vintage road bike spacing of 126 mm by eliminating the 8 mm spacer and then possibly grinding or cutting the excess length off the axle. This would adjust the locknut spacing from 135 mm to 127 mm...which is very close to the vintage road bike (relative) standard of 126 mm. We are not implying this is an ideal solution to the limited availability of vintage road bike hubsets, but it would appear a workable solution with some effort.

Note to international customers regarding shipping...
We apologize to those that feel some of our international shipping charges are too high. We only charge actual shipping rates, but once an order exceeds a certain amount, we hesitate to use the least expensive US Postal Services First Class International service. We feel this way, because this service is not trackable or insurable...so more risk of loss. We prefer the US Postal Services Priority Mail International service for more expensive orders, because this service is trackable at USPS.com and insurable...so less risk of loss. Unfortunately, this service is more expensive, especially for smaller/lighter packages, relative to the First Class International service. We are sorry about these higher shipping costs, but hopefully our notes help to explain why this is the case.
Note to international customers regarding customs...
We also apologize to those that feel their country import taxes, duties and brokerage fees are excessive. As a small US business, we are required by customs' laws to declare each order as a retail sale. Additionally, the declared order value must be equal to total store purchases and/or winning auction bids (less any shipping costs, as these are not considered in the declared value). As a result, each customer will be responsible for paying his/her own country taxes, duties and brokerage fees, which will be collected upon delivery. Again, we apologize for these additional costs, but we cannot afford the penalties and fines that come with breaking customs' laws...so we have to strictly abide by them.
