TECHNICAL ASSOCIATES MODEL F-6 GEIGER MUELLER SURVEY METER (circa 1955)Sold "As Is"
The Technical Associates Model F-6 Geiger-Mueller (GM) survey meter
was introduced in 1955. It was a portable Geiger counter with an external probe having
a 5’ self-coiling cord for greater reach.
The survey meter's
CIRCUIT BOX
is a heavy duty die-cast aluminum top and bottom housing secured together by aluminum latches with an "O" ring seal measuring 10" x 6" x 4.5" approximately.
A canvas adjustable shoulder strap with snap hooks on opposite ends is included.
The top housing of the circuit box has a large meter and built-in loudspeaker for aural indications.
The detector's response is indicated by the meter,
There are two (2) controls: a
RANGE SWITCH
; Off, A, B, X1, X10 and a
B ADJUST
.
This survey meter required two (2) 67.5 volt "B" batteries (Eveready #467 or equivalent, NEDA 203)
and four (4) 1.5 volt type "D" flashlight batteries
(Eveready #D99 or equivalent)
NOT INCLUDED
. Battery installation instructions are located on inside of the bottom housing as shown in the 8th exhibit. The
Eveready #467 zinc-carbon batteries are no longer available, however, they have become available as an alkaline type through another brand, Exell battery. I've seen them for sale on-line (e.g. Lowe's).
The Bakelite
DETECTOR PROBE
is connected to the circuit box via a non-detachable cable and houses a Victoreen 1B85
thin walled (
30 mg/cm2)
Geiger Mueller (GM) tube.
Note
that the handle that was attached to the top housing that held the probe is missing.
The probe detects both beta and gamma. Probe detects beta without the usual window opening and thus is dust free and easy to decontaminate. It was sensitive from 500-5,000 cpm.
The GM tube is in good condition and hasn't collapsed, as shown in the 7th exhibit, as do many of these over time.
This is mainly a "museum" or "conversation" piece.
The meter as a whole appears to exhibit very little outward wear. The interior of the circuit box appears to be in good condition and doesn't exhibit any signs of battery corrosion. This survey meter responds to power when turned on but the dial didn't register any (counts/minute (cpm) when the probe was exposed to a radioactive source.
It would take a "Radio Shack type" to restore/upgrade this meter, but not entirely impossible, mainly due to its some-what simplistic design as compared to today's micro-chip technology.
